Inside Line Promotions – BILLINGS, Mont. (Aug. 27, 2018) – Dominic Scelzi tied his career-best World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series result with a third-place run last Friday at Black Hills Speedway during the Rushmore Outlaw Showdown.

Scelzi and his family owned, Roth Motorsports supported team opened the night by qualifying 10th quickest at the oval in Rapid City, S.D. He then advanced from fourth to third place in a heat race to lock into the seventh starting position for the main event.

“We timed in pretty good and we got to third in the heat by passing Donny (Schatz), which started us seventh in the A Main,” he said. “I felt really, really good from the beginning and I felt like I got better as the race went. We got to second fairly early. Jacob (Allen) had a straightaway lead, but we ran him down to where he was six to eight car lengths in front of us. I caught a lapped car wrong and Brad (Sweet) got by me. Unfortunately a yellow came out a lap later. I think that hurt us. Donny got by us and then we got by Jacob to end third. It was the difference between we ran third and we ended up third. Had the yellow flag flown at a different time or I got by a lapped car differently who knows. I feel like we had a race car that could have won. We were good across the track so that was a good confidence boost for me.”

Scelzi’s third-place finish was his best with the World of Outlaws this season and it marked his third top five with the series this year.

The weekend wrapped up the following night at Big Sky Speedway during the NAPA Auto Parts & Visit Billings presents the Big Sky Brawl at Big Sky Speedway. Scelzi qualified 12th quickest and finished fourth in a heat race to start the A Main on the outside of the sixth row.

“We went from 12th to eighth fairly quick,” he said. “I think I beat the air out of my right rear tire running against the cushion. I felt like it was going flat. I went into turns one and two and got myself buried in the cushion. I had to check up and as soon as I rolled out of it we got over the cushion and off we went. I think we restarted 16th and drove it up to 10th.”

Scelzi rebounded from the mid-race incident to post his eight top 10 of the season with the World of Outlaws. That matches his number of top 10s in the previous five years combined.

The team will compete with the Outlaws in Washington this Friday and Saturday at Skagit Speedway in Alger during the Outlaw Energy Showdown and next Monday at Grays Harbor Raceway in Elma.
