Masse Scores Top-10 Finish in ASCS Frontier Region Opening Weekend

Inside Line Promotions – GILLETTE, Wyo. (June 5, 2018) – Cody Masse posted a top-10 finish during the season-opening weekend for the ASCS Frontier Region.

“It wasn’t a bad weekend,” he said. “We accomplished what we set out to do. We survived the long haul and learned a lot. I was disappointed in our finish on Friday, but that was beyond our control.”

The racing weekend kicked off on Friday at Black Hills Speedway in Rapid City, S.D. – a 12-and-a-half hour haul for Masse – where he soon encountered the trip’s first hurdle.

“We were told that we wouldn’t get any hot laps, which was especially disconcerting to me since I had never raced on a half-mile track,” he said. “I decided it would be best if I started in the back of my heat due to my lack of experience on that size of track. I was able to get a few laps under my belt in the heat race where I started eighth and finished sixth.”

Masse lined up 17th in the feature.

“I was surprised at how good our car was since it was our first time there,” he said. “I passed a couple of cars at the start and then passed a few more. But then the motor started running rough. I was especially concerned because my crew chief didn’t want me to race there because he was afraid it would hurt the motor.

“We got a caution about seven laps in and I went to the work area to see if maybe I had a plug wire off or something. My crew couldn’t find anything wrong so I restarted. But it began sounding worse and I pulled in. We found that the wires to the ignition had come off. It was a shame because cars that I had passed ended up finishing seventh or eighth so I probably would have been in the top 10 if that wouldn’t have happened. But I was also relieved that it was only a minor issue.”

Masse moved on to another new track for him on Saturday at Gillette Thunder Speedway.

“I was pleasantly surprised when I arrived at Gillette because I found the track much better prepared than what I was told to expect,” Masse said. “I didn’t have a good heat race – started sixth and finished fifth. We were a little under-geared and I didn’t do my job.

“We started 12th in the feature and got up to 10th, which is where we finished. I probably should have finished a few spots higher. But for our first night there we’ll be thankful for a smooth night. Now we can get back to some tracks we’ve been to before and take what we’ve learned this year and apply that.”

Masse has another ASCS Frontier Region doubleheader planned for this coming weekend at Gallatin Speedway in Belgrade, Mont., on Friday and Big Sky Speedway in Billings, Mont., on Saturday.

“Gallatin is a beautiful facility and always gets great fan support,” he said. “It’s always fun to race in front of a lot of people. We’ve had our best career ASCS finish of sixth place there twice.

“Big Sky is under new ownership and they’ve been making a lot of changes and improvements. We’re excited to see what’s in store for us there.”
